Charles E. Lucas

Savannah- Charles E. Lucas, 90, died November 10, 2009 at his home at Savannah Square under the care of Hospice Savannah.

Mr. Lucas was born in Owen County, Indiana on April 10, 1919, the son of the late William E. and Dollie Barnes Lucas. He was raised and attended school in Metcalf, Illinois before enlisting in the U. S. Air Force in 1942. During WWII, he served in the Caribbean Theatre with the 26th Antisubmarine Wing as Aircraft Crew Chief and Flight Engineer. During his military service, Master Sergeant Lucas received several decorations and awards including the Air Force Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. After retirement in 1964, Mr. Lucas went to work with the U.S. Post Office where he worked for the following 22 years.

Mr. Lucas was a member of the N.A.R.F.E, a member of Edgar Lodge No. 829 in Hume Illinois, as well as being affiliated locally, and was also a 32nd Degree Mason. He had a great ability to grow and raise roses, was known for his handiness in wood working and carving, and was an avid classic car enthusiast.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Dorothea "Gerri" Lucas; daughter, Harriet Winiger, both of Savannah; granddaughter, Kim McFarland Dan; great-grandchildren, Christian and Conor McFarland, all of Washington, DC; sisters, Ruby Neil of Chrisman, IL and Frances Allison of Royal Center, IN; brother, Bill Lucas of Chattanooga, TN, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 13, 2009 at the Hodgson Chapel of Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors.

Burial: Bonaventure Cemetery
